As the daughter of a U.S. President, Jenna Bush Hager has unique insights on life in the White House.

Even more recently, this month commemorated 14 years since Jenna Bush, daughter of George W. and former First Lady Laura Bush, drove from her teaching position in Maryland to show around the White House to the children of the next sitting President, Barack Obama.

Jenna can’t help but be proud of Sasha, now 10, and Malia, then 7 years old, as she recalls the time they were all together.

I can’t believe it,” the Today co-host said exclusively to E! News. “When my grandfather, George H. W. Bush, took office, he was the same age as my parents and I are now.

Their ages ranged from one year to another, from first to fourth grade.” For Jenna, who is married to Henry Chase Hager and has three children with him (Mila, 9, Poppy, 7, and Hal, 3), this memory represents a full circle.

She revealed, “I have first and fourth graders.” When I was a teacher in Baltimore, Maryland, 14 years ago, the children were simply glints in my eye. She continued, “I did not have this position just yet,” referencing the newspaper Today.

All it is is a fleeting instant that Jenna will always treasure.

The author commented on this visit just two years ago, writing on Instagram that she and her twin sister Barbara Bush “taught the kids how to slide down the banister and all the mysteries of the White House we loved as little girls—the finest hiding areas, the movie theater, and bowling alley.”

And as Jenna told E! News, it’s been wonderful to see the Obama daughters grow into independent young women.

She said, “I guess we knew they would be,” referring to the fact that they had matured into strong, capable women who had achieved independence.

“Even back then, we could make out those brilliant lights. But it makes me so proud and slightly emotional to consider how much their lives and mine have evolved over the past fourteen years. I still can’t believe it’s been fourteen years.”
