Sarah Silverman and Rainn Wilson have an idea for what to do on Thanksgiving Day.
The celebrities, along with Bellamy Young and Alicia Silverstone, are helping Farm Sanctuary promote its Adopt a Turkey Project this Thanksgiving.
The Adopt a Turkey Project asks people who love animals to spend the money they would have spent on a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner to adopt one of the birds instead.
Farm Sanctuary is the country’s first farm animal sanctuary and advocacy group.
It has two rescue locations, one in New York and one in California, where caretakers take care of farm animals saved from abuse and the agriculture industry. Cows, goats, horses, sheep, chickens, and turkeys live in the sanctuaries.
With a one-time donation of $35 to the Adopt a Turkey Project at Farm Sanctuary, a supporter can adopt a rescued turkey in a symbolic way.
The money from the project pays for the turkey’s daily care and helps Farm Sanctuary educate people and fight for animal rights.
The person who adopts a turkey gets a certificate with a picture of their new friend.
In a post on social media about the Adopt a Turkey Project, Wilson said, “I admire people who love animals and want to save them.” He also said that he had adopted a turkey through Farm Sanctuary.
In her statement supporting the project, Sarah Silverman said, “You know that 68 million turkeys will be killed just for the holidays.”
“Farm Sanctuary gives us a different way to celebrate Thanksgiving and make the world a better place at the same time.”
Farm Sanctuary is trying to get animal lovers to skip the turkey on Thanksgiving. Silverman and Wilson are not the only ones who agree with them.
Both Alicia Silverstone and Bellamy Young have talked about how much they like the Adopt a Turkey Project on social media.
