Shelby Carter’s final act before tragically perishing in a house fire was undeniably heroic. In a harrowing turn of events, the courageous new mom swiftly reacted to the rapidly spreading fire. Without hesitation, she secured her precious 12-day-old daughter, Keana Davis, in a car seat and bravely tossed her out of the window. This act of quick thinking was instrumental in saving the life of the newborn.
Carter, a resident of Wyoming, Illinois, who was just 21, lived in the house with her mother, Kathy Hardy, her daughter, and her fiancé, DeShawn Davis. As the fire rapidly engulfed the building, Carter remained calm and quickly contacted the fire department. With quick thinking, she shattered a window on the second floor and safely threw her young child, who was in a car seat, onto a heap of debris.
In a critical moment, Carter managed to rescue baby Keana, who was promptly taken to a nearby hospital and later reunited with her family. Hardy and Davis were not present in the house when the fire occurred.
According to Jacob Plumer, Captain of the Wyoming-Speer Fire Department, Shelby’s selfless and heroic actions demonstrate the boundless love a mother has for her child. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the brevity of life.
Carter was pursuing a career as a pharmacy technician. Her lifeless body was discovered on the second floor of the residence, a tragic victim of smoke inhalation. It is unclear why Shelby did not follow the child out the window, according to the fire department.
According to Anna Steelman, Shelby’s childhood friend and former basketball teammate, she is known for her caring nature and innate maternal instincts. The news of the house fire left her in a state of shock.
On my day off, I was making my way back to town after finishing up some errands. “I could see smoke rising over Wyoming,” said the individual speaking to TODAY. Living in a rural community, the sight of smoke didn’t immediately register as a house fire. In this area, fires are typically started with a specific intention in mind. They are often used for burning leaves, clearing ditches, disposing of burn piles, or enjoying bonfires. When I saw the thick smoke, I never imagined it would turn out to be a house fire. That’s not a common sight here, especially one as heartbreaking as this.”
Steelman expressed her surprise upon discovering that it was her friend’s house, but she wasn’t taken aback to hear that Shelby had acted swiftly to protect her child.
“I’m not surprised by her quick instinct to strap Keana in her car seat and get her outside,” Steelman remarked. She had always been focused on completing tasks and achieving her goals. She was determined to rescue the baby, devising a rational strategy and executing it with unwavering resolve. It’s that simple. That’s the Shelby I know.”
Shelby’s uncle, Jesse Hardy, recalls a resilient and wise young woman who possessed a maturity that surpassed her age.
“I was actually living with my sister when Shelby was born, so she has been a part of my life for a very long time,” Hardy shared. Many people may consider her a hero, but for those of us who were familiar with her, she was simply being herself, Shelby. There are people in this world who are caretakers. That was her true identity.”
According to Hardy, DeShawn Davis, Shelby’s fiancé and Keana’s father, is managing reasonably well given the circumstances.
He has taken on the role of a single father. He prefers to keep her within his line of vision at all times. He is an incredibly compassionate and affectionate father, who now prioritizes Keana’s needs before making any choices.
