Mexican Farmland Vanishes in a Huge Sinkhole Before Farmers’ Eyes

The farmer will need to find a new field and build a new ranch.

A sinkhole with a diameter of 328 feet nearly swallowed the ranch along with its inhabitants. The field, according to geologists, is no longer suitable for farming. Farmer Heriberto Sanchez is feeling down.

An enormous sinkhole has opened up on farmland in the Mexican state of Puebla. Farmer Heriberto Sanchez, who owns the land and the ranch on it, initially didn’t think much of a noticeable sinkhole he saw forming. But suddenly, the ground began to collapse into a 66-foot-deep pit filled with water, with a loud crash.

The sinkhole initially had a diameter of 197 feet but expanded to 328 feet overnight, coming dangerously close to Sanchez’s home.

Local authorities and geologists arrived at the scene immediately. The geologists discovered that the sinkhole diameter is no more than 16 feet. The fissure continues to widen. According to geologists, the land at the ranch developed a massive crack due to groundwater eroding the rock. It’s suspected that the crack might have been caused by water extraction for farming activities.

The Sanchez family has been evacuated. A 1,640-foot barrier has been set up around the sinkhole to prevent possible injuries and fatalities of curious onlookers. The farmer will need to find a new field and build a new ranch.
