My Mother-in-Law Accidentally Called Me Instead of Her Friend, and I Listened to Everything: It Turns Out She Doesn’t Think Highly of Me But Here’s What I Did

This weekend, as usual, we visited my husband’s parents. We had a delicious lunch, enjoyed some wine, watched a movie, and then headed home. My mother-in-law was in a cheerful mood, and I even thought she seemed a bit tipsy.

When we got home, my husband went straight to take a shower, and my phone rang. It was my mother-in-law calling. At first, I thought maybe we had forgotten something, and she was calling to let us know. But it turned out she had dialed the wrong number.

My name and her best friend’s name are both Emma. Apparently, she misread the contact in her phone…

I couldn’t resist and started listening to her monologue, nodding along at the appropriate moments. It turns out my mother-in-law doesn’t think very highly of me. She considers me a shallow, uneducated girl that her son is supporting. She doesn’t even acknowledge my profession as a real job, calling it something like a “toothpick.” She’s also convinced that after having kids, I’ll gain a lot of weight and become unattractive to my husband.
In general, she thinks I’m not worthy of such a wonderful son. I couldn’t take it anymore and eventually hung up. I was filled with so many emotions. I wanted to confront my husband and tell him exactly what I thought about his mother. But since he was still in the shower, I decided to call my older sister instead.

Sarah has been married for ten years and has two sons. Her mother-in-law is a difficult person, but my sister managed to develop a perfect relationship with her. Sarah listened to me and advised me not to start any arguments. Life is full of such situations. She said that when I have children of my own, I’ll understand my mother-in-law’s behavior.

I mustered all my willpower and took my sister’s advice. Now that I’m pregnant, I realize how right she was and how wise her advice was. To every mother, her child is the most precious.
