Solid Gold: Phil Collins Sits Down With Johnny and Performs “Against All Odds” and “The Roof Is Leaking”

In June 1985, Phil Collins made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. At the time, he had recently released his third solo studio album, No Jacket Required, in January of that year. However, on the show, Collins chose to perform his hit single “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now),” a chart-topping song from the 1984 movie Against All Odds. This track was Collins’ first of seven solo number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

After the performance, Collins sat down for an engaging conversation with Johnny Carson. Following their chat, instead of performing one of his latest hits from No Jacket Required—like “Sussudio” or “One More Night”—Collins surprised the audience by playing “The Roof is Leaking,” a standout track from his 1981 solo debut album, Face Value.

Both Johnny and the audience were captivated by his performance, and I believe you’ll enjoy it just as much.
