Six-year-old Oaklynn Schweder has been found alive and well after a harrowing three-day search. The young girl went missing near her home on September 19 and was located in a forested area between her residence and the local Indian Band office.
Oaklynn was discovered by one of the volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, which included over 600 volunteers collaborating with police and SAR personnel. Oaklynn is on the autism spectrum and is non-verbal.
A touching moment was captured on video by searcher Melissa Tom Dyck, who shared the footage in a Facebook group dedicated to the search.
The video, which has garnered over 10,000 shares, shows Oaklynn’s mother, Gail Skin, rushing into the woods to embrace her daughter. Her father, James, followed closely behind as the family emerged from the foliage to cheers, applause, and hugs from the search party.
Paramedics were present to ensure Oaklynn’s well-being, and her mother later provided updates on social media, expressing her profound gratitude.
“My heart is so happy it could burst,” Gail wrote, sharing photos of Oaklynn safe and sound. “I’m sitting here watching my baby girl sleep, and I’m just so thankful she’s beside me.”
The strong support from the community and beyond played a crucial role in bringing Oaklynn home.
“The community truly came together to assist with sharing information, providing food and shelter for volunteers, arranging transportation, and offering parking in town while setting up a staging area,” the Burns Lake SAR stated in a post.
