A son traveled 5,000 miles to surprise his dad on his birthday in a funny disguise. When Tim O’Brien planned to celebrate his 80th birthday by flying his family from Sacramento, California, to Cork, Ireland, his son Cormac thought he wouldn’t be able to join them.
Heartwarming footage from earlier in August captures Tim enjoying a drink with family at a pub when a man wearing glasses and a cap approached him, holding a pint.
After saying, “Hey, it’s your birthday,” Cormac, 46, removed the disguise, prompting cheers from the table as his dad burst into laughter.
Cormac shared, “It’s tough to get an 80-year-old to laugh like that, so it was definitely worth it.
“I couldn’t travel with the rest of the family, but I went through a lot to get here with my daughter at the last moment.
“I made three trips to Los Angeles to rush my passport, and then we faced 48 hours of delays, even sleeping on airport floors to make it here.
“Dad is an Irish immigrant who has lived the American dream, so we’ve been lucky to visit Ireland often and experience its rich culture and heritage.
“It was really challenging to keep the surprise from the 40 family members who mostly live in Ireland, but it was wonderful to see everyone and have my daughter by my side.”
