Simon Challenges 11-Year-Old Boy to Sing A Cappella—He Stuns the Entire Room into Silence

How many exceptional talents have graced the stage of the renowned reality show America’s Got Talent? Countless performers of all ages and backgrounds have captivated audiences with singing, dancing, magic, acrobatics, stunts, beatboxing, mind-reading, animal acts, and more. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, moments like 11-year-old D’Corey Johnson’s audition for the show’s 18th season remind you there’s always room for surprises.

Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, D’Corey—now 12—fearlessly took to the AGT stage, proving that even at his young age, he had the confidence and talent to stand alongside the competition’s best. In his pre-performance interview, the aspiring Broadway singer and future movie star confidently told judge Sofia Vergara, “I feel that I can win it.” Dressed to impress in a gray suit and a shiny green bowtie, D’Corey certainly looked the part, but it was his performance that truly stole the show.

For his audition, D’Corey chose the classic power ballad “Open Arms” by Journey. Right from the opening notes, his rich, mature voice and smooth vibrato caught the judges’ attention. While his polished performance wowed the audience, it wasn’t enough for Simon Cowell, who challenged him to deliver the song again—this time, without a backing track.

Without hesitation, D’Corey accepted the challenge, delivering an a cappella rendition that left everyone stunned. Stripped of instrumentation, his voice shone even brighter, showcasing his natural talent and undeniable potential. Simon gave him a standing ovation, and all four judges enthusiastically handed him a unanimous “yes,” sending him to the next round.

D’Corey advanced all the way to the semifinals and secured a spot in the Top 5, but his journey ended before the Top 3. Still, at just 12 years old, his future in music is undeniably bright. Watch his remarkable audition below and see why D’Corey Johnson is destined for greatness.
