Amber Riley Shocks with Dolly Parton Style Cover of TLC’s “Waterfalls” on BBC’s Musical Genre Challenge

We all belted out TLC’s “Waterfalls” a million times in the ‘90s, but Dolly Parton? Not so much. That is, until Amber Riley hit the stage for her stellar performance in the BBC’s Musical Genre Challenge. When the Glee star was tasked with putting her spin on “Waterfalls” in a country style, expectations were high—and Riley did not disappoint. With her undeniable versatility, she transformed the 1995 R&B hit into a full-blown country anthem.

As the band laid down a classic country beat, Riley tapped into her inner Dolly Parton, delivering a genius take on the iconic track. Her exaggerated Southern accent threw the guests for a loop at first, but they quickly recovered, utterly mesmerized by her vocal range. While many remember Riley’s Broadway and R&B roots, it’s clear she can master any genre she sets her mind to.

The BBC shared Riley’s challenge on YouTube on January 2, 2023, where it has since racked up over a million views. Fans were quick to shower her with praise, with one commenting, “Riley has one of the most, if not the most versatile voice in the business. She does gospel, R&B, Broadway, soul, pop, and now country like a chameleon changes colors.” Another fan chimed in, “I think Riley is just like Kelly Clarkson— you don’t want either of them covering your song because they’ll do it so much better than you.”

“Waterfalls,” released in May 1995, was the third single from TLC’s legendary album CrazySexyCool. Written by Lisa Lopes, Marqueze Etheridge, and Organized Noize, with the latter also producing the track, it became an international hit. It spent seven weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Switzerland, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe. Now a certified R&B classic, “Waterfalls” remains one of TLC’s defining songs.
