While college championships are often dominated by mainstream sports, the Universal Dance Association’s College National Championships deserve just as much attention. Held annually, this competition features college teams in three categories: Hip hop, jazz, and pom. The 2025 event, which took place from January 17-19, showcased impressive performances from teams across the U.S., each putting in countless hours of preparation.
This year, the Ohio State Dance Team captured the coveted National Champion title in the jazz category. Their breathtaking routine quickly gained viral attention online. One viewer shared their awe, saying, “I can’t get over this. How do you even visualize and teach something like this? The energy, the emotion—it was incredible.” Another commenter admitted, “This was unsettling in a way. The gloves, the strings, the glitchy movements… it made me feel off, but that’s what made it amazing.”
Not only was the Ohio State Dance Team’s performance mesmerizing, but their choreographer also played a significant role in their success. The routine was created by none other than Ricky Ubeda, a former winner of So You Think You Can Dance (season 11). With such a talented team and an award-winning choreographer behind them, the Ohio State Dance Team proved they’re a force to be reckoned with. Fans are already eagerly awaiting their performance next year.
