She Wouldn’t Stop Mocking My Small Wedding, So I Clapped Back — and Everyone’s Upset

People have different tastes, sure — but sometimes those differences stir up more than just polite disagreement. In my case, they’ve put a serious strain on family ties.

I’m 29 now, but I got married at 20. My husband and I were young, totally in love, and flat-out broke. I never dreamed of a big wedding anyway, so we kept things intimate and simple. No fuss, just love.

My cousin, who’s 36 now, helped a lot with the decorations. I’m not big on that kind of stuff — I was okay with it looking a little plain. But she went out of her way to make it special, and I was so grateful. I paid her afterward, sang her praises in a speech, and thanked her all day long. I truly meant it.

A few months before my wedding, she had her big day — an over-the-top, ultra-glam affair that people still talk about. It was stunning. But about four years ago, her marriage ended in divorce.

Ever since then, something in her shifted. Whenever we’re together, she finds a way to trash my wedding. She mocks how tiny it was, makes fun of the venue, insults my bridesmaids and even my husband’s family, calling them “useless” on the day. Usually, I let it slide — her opinion doesn’t really matter to me.

But today was different. We were at a big Father’s Day gathering, surrounded by family, when she started tearing into my wedding again — this time to her new boyfriend. From the second she saw me, it was nonstop. And something in me just… snapped.

I turned to her and said, “Well, at least I’m still married.”

Silence. Dead silence.

Now the whole family’s upset with me. They’re saying I went too far, that I hit below the belt. But no one — not once — has ever told her to stop mocking me all these years.

So now I’m left wondering… Was I really wrong? Or was it just the truth she didn’t want to hear?
