In the 1990s, when the world’s runways belonged to a handful of legendary names, Spain had its own supermodel. Born in Albacete, Esther Cañadas rose to stand alongside the biggest names of the decade, and her face became one of the most recognizable in fashion.
Her look was bold, sculpted and impossible to copy. Those famously full lips and that intense, magnetic gaze made her a favorite of photographers and designers alike. She fronted campaigns and walked for a long list of major houses, including Dior, Chanel, Valentino, Versace, Givenchy and Calvin Klein.

Hollywood took notice too. Esther appeared in The Thomas Crown Affair and later in Spanish projects such as Torrente, proving she could hold the screen as well as the catwalk.
Then came the years away from the spotlight, and with them the question fans keep asking: whatever happened to Esther Cañadas?
The answer, in 2026, is that she’s very much back. In April, just days after celebrating her 49th birthday, she stepped out in Madrid as the face of the Spring/Summer 2026 collection from Woman Limited at El Corte Inglés. She arrived in an elegant chocolate-brown total look and carried herself with the calm confidence of someone who has nothing left to prove.
Her current look is polished, natural and refined: a warm, glowing complexion, softly styled hair and that same piercing stare that made her famous. Fans comparing “then and now” photos will notice the classic elegance she has kept, now with the grace of experience. She has clearly moved from the edgy 90s glamour of her early years to a timeless, sophisticated style.

The comeback didn’t start this year. She returned to the runway in 2021 for the iconic Fendace show, appeared at the Carolina Herrera show in Madrid, and was featured in a Harper’s Bazaar España editorial in September 2025. Now she is settled in Spain again, and the country’s fashion world is welcoming her home.
Off the runway, her priorities are clear. She has spoken warmly about her 11-year-old daughter Galia, whom she calls the great love of her life. At Madrid Fashion Week she also spoke out about extreme thinness in the industry, stressing the importance of health and good habits over an unrealistic image.
Asked about the pressure women feel over their bodies and appearance, she answered with perspective. Life has different seasons, she said, and nobody can be in campaign mode 365 days a year.
Decades after she first conquered the runways, Esther Cañadas is proof that true style doesn’t fade. It evolves.
