Karen Mulder is one of the defining faces of the 1990s supermodel era. Born on June 1 in Vlaardingen, in the Netherlands, she grew up far from the glamour of Paris and Milan. Her birth year appears as 1968, 1969, or 1970 depending on the source, but 1969 is the most commonly cited.
Mulder never planned to be a model. As a teenager she wore braces and dismissed the idea when she saw an advertisement for an Elite Model Management contest. A friend secretly entered her, and in 1985 she took part in the Elite Look of the Year competition and placed second. That result led Elite Paris to sign her, and her career took off within a couple of years.
By her second year on the runway, she was working for Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Christian Lacroix, Versace, and Giorgio Armani. She went on to appear on the covers of British Vogue, Spanish Vogue, and many other magazines. She became the face of a Nivea campaign, and she was honored with a toy doll in her likeness. The doll was part of a line made by Hasbro that also featured other top models of the era. A tulip was even named after her.
In 1992, Mulder signed a contract with Victoria’s Secret, making her one of the earliest faces of the brand. In 1997 and 1998 she appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was also known for her striking blonde hair and pale grey-blue eyes, and she spoke several languages, including Dutch, English, and French.
Behind the scenes, however, her life was becoming increasingly difficult. In 2000 she stepped away from modeling. In October 2001 she appeared on the French talk show Tout le monde en parle, where she made deeply disturbing allegations against various people and institutions in France, including her former agency. The segment was never broadcast, and the recording was reportedly erased. Her allegations were never substantiated, and her family said she was struggling with serious personal problems.
In December 2002, after years of struggling with depression, she was hospitalized following a suicide attempt. She survived and gradually rebuilt her life.
