There’s a modest restaurant in a small Alabama town with no cash register or prices, just a lot of soul… and soul cuisine.

The menu changes everyday at Drexell & Honeybee’s in downtown Brewton near the Florida border, but there’s always a robust range of Southern cuisine to enjoy: fried chicken, cornbread, and collared greens are frequently available for lunch from Tuesday to Thursday.

What distinguishes this location? Southern friendliness that never ends. No matter how bad a person’s luck is, they never have to worry about not having enough money for lunch.

After you’ve completed your dessert—perhaps a blueberry cobbler?

—you simply leave whatever you can, even if it’s just a handful of pennies or a thank-you letter, in a private booth near the restaurant entrance.

The owners, Freddie and Lisa Thomas-McMillan, are a husband and wife pair who make no money from their business. 100% of the donations are used to feed people. So, what do they gain out of it all? Joy.

They express genuine delight in knowing that their clients leave “with a full stomach, a full heart, and the realization that you are loved and worthy of love.”

Lisa’s heart has always been large. She has run a food bank over the years. She has made her home available to those in need.

She believes it began in second grade, when she got a significant lesson about sharing from a little girl who always had a nicer sandwich but cheerfully shared it with Lisa in exchange for part of her peanut butter and jelly.

“‘Feed the Need’ is our mission statement,” Lisa told GNN. “We will aid people with whatever requirements they have.”

Of course, the pandemic has made it a little more difficult to run a restaurant in recent months. But it hasn’t stopped this giving Alabama family from doing what they enjoy.

“At the end of June, we worked out how to make to-go orders while keeping everyone safe…working It’s out great, and we’re very glad to be able to do what we do, especially with COVID-19 affecting so many people.”

“When my husband and I started, we vowed to contribute a portion of our retirement back into the restaurant’s operation… as you might imagine, donations are down, but we will continue to try to be of service to everyone who come to our door.”
