Since his wife died a few years ago, Pedro, who is very serious about his business, has worked from home. He can now take care of his 12-year-old daughter Maria and meet all of her needs because of this.
He drove his daughter to school every morning, but she and her friend Anna would walk home during the day. Pedro would sit on his porch and wait for her there.
Anna’s house was further down the street, so Maria got there first. Pedro would say hello back to the girls with a smile on his face.
Peter had noticed that Maria had been bringing dirty clothes home for the past month. He didn’t think much about it and just thought that was how kids act on the playground.
He did, however, notice that his daughter and her friend were no longer walking together. Anna was always chosen first. Usually, Maria would arrive twenty to thirty minutes after that.
He decided to go talk to Anna’s mother.
«Hello Lucy, how are things with you today? Is there something wrong with Anna and Maria? I noticed that they stopped walking together after school. He queried.
“Hello, Pedro! There’s another fight between the ladies. “You know, that’s teen stuff,” Anna’s mother replied.
Because he didn’t think this was a good idea, Pedro decided to find out where Maria was going after school the next day.
He waited in the car in front of the school. He saw his daughter, Maria, leave. He then turned on the car’s engine and slowly walked toward her.
She went into an old, empty house after a while. Pedro quietly parked and then followed her into the house. He saw Maria walk up to an old man who was wearing rags.
“Maria! Escape from him! He shouted.
When the daughter jumped to her father’s loud yell, she dropped the bag of food she had brought from the school cafeteria for the man.
She began to say “Daddy,” though. Before she knew it, Peter had picked her up off the ground and put her in the car.
Maria, you can’t just go into empty houses and start talking to homeless people like that. Could he do you harm? He said it angrily.
Dad, I’ve been giving him food for weeks. When Maria heard her father cry, she yelled, “He’s never touched me.
Even though he hasn’t done it yet, he can still do it in the future. There are also a number of risks outside. You can’t walk alone in dangerous places. Maria, make a promise. He said it again and again, still unable to believe what he had just found out.
Maria reluctantly nodded.
«I swear. But, Dad, could you please bring me the pictures he drew for me? Please give me the sketches, he begged.
Maria wouldn’t stop crying, so he took her back to the empty house and saw the same man sitting on the floor.
Pedro said, “My daughter can’t stop going on and on about some drawings she left here.”
The homeless person gave him some pieces of paper in a quiet way. Pedro was shocked to find out that these were pictures of his late wife.
“Your daughter is a nice girl. One day, I was so tired, sick, and hungry that I had to lie on the floor.
Maria tried to help me, but her friend told her not to get too close to me. In his opening statement, the man said, “She stayed, but her friend got mad and ran home.”
«While I rested, she made me a sandwich, got me some tea, and kept me busy. Then she went with me as I went to my place to stay. After we talked for a while, I told her I used to be an artist. He went on to say that she gave me some supplies and asked me to draw her late mother.
The homeless man said that Maria often brought him sandwiches and visited him, but he never asked for money for his drawings.
She is a beautiful young woman. She always brought me food, so I was glad to finish the photos for her because I could tell how much they meant to her.
She would sit on the floor while I drew to wait for me to finish. This made her clothes dirty.
Peter felt bad right away for judging the man wrongly. He found out that Mary missed her mother and saw in him a loving friend who would paint pictures of her mother.
«I apologize if I misread you. I thought you were up to no good, and the thought of losing my daughter hurt too much. I’m sorry, and I really appreciate that you helped her remember her mother.
The man living on the street then gave him his last drawing.
Yesterday, she asked me to draw this, so I did. “I just finished it and was going to give it to her,” he said.
When Pedro took the piece of paper in his hands, he saw that it was a picture of his family. He laughed with Maria and his late wife Mariana as they ate dinner. Pedro started crying.
He shouted, “This is lovely!” “Thank you very much. I will put it in a frame.
He thought for a moment before asking the man a question:
“My best friend is in charge of a gallery. Would you like to meet him? For his exhibitions and art shows, he hires artists.
The man smiled.
“I’d love to. I’m grateful. I’ve been setting up my tent in this empty place for a while now. “I would love to have another chance to live a normal life,” he replied.
That was the beginning of a great change in his life that let him do what he really liked while still being able to eat, sleep, and live comfortably.
Once he started getting paid for his work at the art gallery, he was able to rent a small studio and live there. He was happy and content.
He also kept in touch with Pedro and Maria and went to dinner with them often. He started teaching the girl how to draw, and that’s where she fell in love with painting.
