My Son’s Money Should Go to Our Family, Not His In-Laws

When family members argue about money, it can get very heated and emotional. May firmly believes that her son should prioritize funding his sister’s medical treatments rather than covering his in-laws’ rent. Once she voiced her worries, the situation quickly spiraled into a heartbreaking twist. May graciously decided to share her difficult experience with us.

“My son is his family’s sole provider.

I recently discovered that he has been covering his in-laws’ rent. I was absolutely livid. I gently reminded him about the situation with his sister, who is currently facing illness and loneliness. I suggested that if he wishes to assist someone financially, it might be beneficial to consider supporting her, as she requires significant assistance for her costly treatments.

Today, I got a call from his wife and she sounded really worried. She began shouting and criticizing me for getting involved in their financial matters. Later in the day, I got another call, but this one was from a real estate agent. I was taken aback when he mentioned that he could offer his assistance if I ever decided to sell my house. I was taken aback by his request and quickly expressed my disinterest in selling my house before ending the call.

I asked my son about the situation, and he reminded me that he’s the one who paid for my apartment. He suggested that if I truly want to support his sick sister, the best course of action would be to sell my house, downsize to a smaller flat, and contribute the money towards her needs.

I feel a profound sense of disappointment towards my son. I still believe he should take action and support his sister rather than putting in such a great effort to win over his wife. Pleas tell me where I was wrong in this difficult situation.
