Helena Christensen was born on December 25, 1968, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a Danish father and a Peruvian mother. She won Miss Universe Denmark in 1986 and soon moved to Paris to start her modeling career.
By the early 1990s, she was one of the most in-demand faces in fashion, walking for top designers and appearing in leading magazines alongside fellow supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. Her defining moment came in 1991, when she starred in Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” video, shot in black and white by photographer Herb Ritts. It became a pop-culture landmark and made her famous far beyond the fashion world.
Her personal life drew just as much attention. She was in a high-profile relationship with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence in the early 90s, and later spent years with actor Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead, with whom she has a son, Mingus, born in 1999.
Christensen never stayed in one lane. She became an accomplished photographer, co-founded Nylon magazine, launched a clothing line with her childhood friend Leif Sigersen, and designed a lingerie collection for Triumph in 2012.
In 2026, she is busier than ever. She sat front row at the Tod’s show in Milan in February, attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Los Angeles in March, and walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in May. In June she launched “Made in Denmark,” a collection with the Danish label Mads Nørgaard, with part of the proceeds going to charity. In September she celebrated 25 years with the lingerie brand Coco de Mer in London and walked the runway at the Richard Quinn show during London Fashion Week. She is based in New York and has also moved into interior design in recent years.
As for how she looks today, Helena has aged gracefully and naturally. At Cannes she wore a long black floral lace gown with simple silver hoop earrings, and her long chestnut hair was styled in a sleek blowout with side-swept bangs. Her style is relaxed and understated, and it still turns heads.
