Linda Hamilton at 70: The Terminator Icon Who Refuses to Chase Youth

When Linda Hamilton walked into movie history as Sarah Connor, she became the face of a new kind of screen heroine, tough and tireless. Decades later she is making a different kind of statement, simply by letting herself age.

Hamilton turned 70 on September 26, 2026. She was born in Salisbury, Maryland, and rose to fame with The Terminator in 1984. She followed it with the blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991, then returned to the role in Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019.

Her recent years have been busy. Hamilton joined the fifth and final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things as the villainous military scientist Dr. Kay, which premiered in November 2025. She has said she had been thinking about retiring because of a long-standing hip problem before the show’s creators personally persuaded her to sign on.

Along the way, she has become one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices for aging naturally. In an AARP interview during the Stranger Things release, she said she doesn’t spend any time trying to look younger. Her explanation was simple: she has accepted that this is “the face that I’ve earned.”

She also said that face tells her a lot, even when it isn’t what she wants to hear. She isn’t altering her face surgically, but she isn’t ignoring her health either. She says being at peace with her age doesn’t mean giving up on taking care of herself.

That care looks practical rather than glamorous. While filming Stranger Things, she trained with Pilates, yoga, free weights and machines. She described the routine as less about building muscle and more about asking what her body needs to loosen up each day. After years of performing her own stunts, she has acknowledged that her body carries a lot of wear and tear.

Her philosophy comes down to one word: fluid. She has said that rigidity, in both thinking and moving, is what really wears people down, and she has worked to stay flexible in body and mind throughout her life.

Asked about her co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has said he enjoys nothing about getting older, Hamilton took the opposite view. She says she inhabits herself more fully now than she ever did when she was young. She also told the interviewer she doesn’t chase beauty or longevity in particular.

Her definition of beauty comes from her daughter, Josephine. When Josephine was about six, she told her mother that a woman they saw was beautiful because her face was filled with joy. Hamilton has used that as her own measure ever since. Her version of a beauty routine, she says, is “I work on the joy.”

Joy seems to be showing up in her life in other ways. Hamilton became a grandmother recently, after her son Dalton Abbott had a child, and she has spoken warmly about embracing that new chapter. She has also described a good balance between work and private life, splitting her time between acting jobs and a quieter existence at home in New Orleans.

The death of her identical twin sister, Leslie, in 2020 changed how she approaches her time. Hamilton has said it pushed her to finally tackle bucket-list items she had put off. One example: she started riding and jumping horses again after a gap of about 40 years.

She has also been open about how hard her earlier years were. She has joked that she was a “hot mess” for her first four decades, and she credits years of therapy with giving her the tools she uses today. Her view of aging seems to come from that long road: the lines on her face are part of a life she is glad to have lived.

For many women watching, that may be the real appeal. Hamilton isn’t selling a secret or a product. She is showing that a woman can be strong, working and admired at 70 without pretending to be 40.

Her acting career isn’t over either. She is credited with a role in the fourth season of the series Dark Winds.

In 1991, Linda Hamilton showed the world what a tough woman looked like. In 2026, she is showing what a confident one looks like.
